Rescuing Veterans and Horses– With Each Other
Serving Our Fellow Service Members
Heroes and Angels Project (HaAP) was started by a group of people that feel passionately about horses and helping veterans. Two of the founding members, Reece and Jessica, are Army veterans.
As such, we know all too well that the veteran community is experiencing a mental health crisis. This is caused by many factors, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), loss of loved ones, and loss of camaraderie after separating from the military.
Horses too have a challenge. As equine sports become more cost prohibitive, many responsible owners have had to relinquish their animals to rescue groups. Unfortunately, not every equestrian is so responsible and many horses are left to fend for themselves in dire conditions. Abuse, neglect, starvation, and medical problems are all seen regularly at rescue centers.
At HaAP, we wanted to help with both of these challenges. What better way to do that than by rescuing veterans and horses, with each other? Equine therapy has begun gaining traction. It is our hope that we can lessen the veteran crisis using rescue horses. These beautiful creatures have so much love and empathy to give. They just need a chance.
"Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion."
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
